Quiz Engine

Overview

Quiz Engine is TotalApp's dedicated assessment builder. It operates in two modes that can be used independently or together: a Manual Quiz Builder for fine-grained control over every question, and an AI Quiz Assistant for rapid quiz generation through natural language conversation.

Quizzes created here can be used in two ways: delivered as standalone assessments through the Quiz Engine interface, or embedded as a Quiz Lesson within a Course Builder course.

Manual Quiz Builder

Open the Quiz Engine, click Add Quiz, and give the quiz a title. The quiz editor opens with an empty question list. Use the Add Question button to add questions one at a time.

For each question you specify:

• Question text — the question itself. Supports basic formatting.
• Question type — see the question types below.
• Answer options (for Multiple Choice) — up to 6 options; mark one or more as correct.
• Point value — how many points a correct answer is worth. Default is 1.
• Explanation (optional) — shown after the learner answers. Explains why the correct answer is right.

AI Quiz Assistant

Open the AI panel from the right edge of the Quiz Engine screen. The assistant can generate complete quiz questions from a text description. All you need to provide is a topic and optionally the difficulty level, number of questions, and question type preference.

The AI generates questions with plausible wrong answers (distractors) — not obviously absurd options. This is important for meaningful assessment; a learner who selects an absurd wrong answer may not actually understand the material. The AI is prompted specifically to generate distractors that represent common misconceptions.

Quiz Delivery Settings

Before publishing a quiz for learner access, configure the delivery settings in the quiz settings panel:

• Time Limit — set a countdown timer (e.g. 30 minutes). When time expires, the quiz is automatically submitted with answers given so far.
• Randomise Questions — shuffle question order per attempt, preventing learners from memorising a fixed sequence.
• Randomise Options — shuffle answer options within each multiple-choice question.
• Show Results Immediately — learner sees their score and correct answers immediately after submitting. Disable this to reveal results only after a set deadline.
• Pass Threshold — minimum percentage score for a "pass". Used when the quiz is embedded in a course as a requirement for lesson completion.
• Maximum Attempts — how many times a learner can retake the quiz. Set to 1 for a formal assessment; leave unlimited for practice quizzes.

Results and Analytics

The Results tab of each quiz shows aggregated analytics across all submissions:

• Per-question success rate — the percentage of learners who answered each question correctly. Low-rate questions may indicate confusing wording or a training gap.
• Score distribution — a histogram of scores across all attempts.
• Per-learner history — each learner's attempt history with date, time taken, and score.
• Most missed questions — a ranked list of the questions learners got wrong most often.

Export results to Excel from the Results tab toolbar. The export includes all individual attempt records for external analysis.

My Tests Tab

The My Tests tab in the Quiz Engine shows all quizzes created by the current user. Use the category filter tabs to narrow by topic, and the search bar to find a specific quiz by title. The view-mode toggle switches between a list view (showing question count, last modified date, and publish status) and a card grid view.

My Tests AI Assistant

The AI assistant in My Tests analyzes your quiz performance data to identify weak topics, spot learning gaps, and recommend targeted practice. It understands your test results, question types, and performance trends to help you study more effectively and prepare better for future assessments.

Performance Analytics with AI

• Weak Area Detection — automatically identifies topics where you scored lowest across all your attempts and submissions.
• Trend Analysis — tracks whether your performance is improving, plateauing, or declining over time on specific topics.
• Question-Level Insights — shows which individual questions you struggle with most, and what misconceptions you might have.
• Personalized Practice Recommendations — suggests which quizzes to retake or which new topics to study based on gaps.

How to Use It

Open the AI Assistant panel from the right edge of My Tests. Select one or more quizzes to analyze, or ask questions about all your tests. The assistant reads your attempt history, scores, and per-question performance data. Ask it to identify patterns, explain why you might be struggling with certain topics, or suggest a focused study plan.
