The Automation mode is TotalApp's core platform for building event-driven pipelines. You design workflows visually on the Workflow Editor canvas, then connect external events through Trigger Control, schedule recurring runs with the Task Scheduler, and observe everything in real-time with Monitoring, Execution Heatmap, and Workflow Pulse.

All automation screens are available from the Automation app mode. Switch to Automation mode from the mode switcher in the top header or from the My Apps screen.

Start with the Workflow Editor

If you are new to TotalApp automation, open the Workflow Editor, drag a Text Input node and a Blog node, connect them, and click Run. This three-step introduction shows the entire pipeline lifecycle in under a minute.

Switching to Automation Mode

  1. Click the mode switcher button in the top header (shows the current mode name and icon).
  2. Select Automation from the mode list.
  3. The sidebar updates to show only Automation screens. All other modes remain accessible via the switcher.

Mode-Exclusive Screens

Some automation screens (Monitoring, Heatmap, Pulse) are exclusive to Automation mode and do not appear in other modes' sidebars by default. You can add them to any mode from Settings → App Modes.

Common Workflows

  • AI content pipeline — Text Input → Blog → Send Mail: generate a blog post and email it automatically.
  • Webhook-triggered report — Trigger Control fires a workflow when an external event arrives; the workflow fetches data, transforms it, and writes a file.
  • Scheduled digest — Task Scheduler runs a pipeline every morning that pulls data from an API, summarises it with AI, and posts to Slack.
  • ETL pipeline — Pipeline Designer ingests a CSV, cleans rows with a Script node, and pushes records to a database.

Frequently Asked Questions

What node types are available on the Workflow Editor canvas?
The canvas supports 30+ node types spanning triggers, AI content generation (e.g. Blog, dw-content nodes), transforms, scripts, and outputs like Send Mail, File Write, and Modal View. Nodes are connected with edges to form a left-to-right pipeline, and each node's category (util, dw-content, output, etc.) determines its accepted inputs and produced outputs.
How is Automation different from Trigger Control and Task Scheduler?
The Workflow Editor is where you design the pipeline itself. Trigger Control manages inbound/outbound webhooks that fire a workflow in response to external events, while Task Scheduler runs a workflow on a recurring cron schedule. Both feed into the same underlying workflow definitions — they just control *when* a workflow executes rather than *what* it does.
Where can I see whether my workflows are running successfully?
Use Monitoring for real-time execution logs and error tracking, Execution Heatmap to visualise run density and spot bottlenecks over time, and Workflow Pulse for a live heartbeat view of latency, throughput, and health across every active pipeline.
Are Automation screens available in every app mode?
Not by default. Monitoring, Execution Heatmap, and Workflow Pulse are exclusive to Automation mode and won't appear in other modes' sidebars unless you add them manually. You can enable any Automation screen for another mode from Settings → App Modes.
