Overview
Africa is the world's second-largest continent by area and population, and home to the most sovereign nations of any continent — 54 recognized countries. The African continent spans an extraordinary range of geography: the Sahara Desert in the north, the Congo Basin rainforests at the center, the Great Rift Valley running through East Africa, and the diverse savannas and highlands of Southern Africa.
The Africa Map Explorer gives you a focused view of the entire continent, allowing you to analyze population distributions, economic indicators, and geographic patterns across all five of Africa's major geographic regions. Load Africa
Type load africa in the Map Explorer terminal to zoom directly to the African continent. All 54 countries become selectable immediately.
Regions
Africa is commonly divided into five geographic regions. The Map Explorer organizes country data by region to help you quickly navigate the continent:
North Africa
Includes Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Mauritania. Dominated by the Sahara Desert. Major economic connections to Europe and the Middle East. Egypt and Algeria are the region's largest economies.
West Africa
The most populous African region. Includes Nigeria (Africa's largest economy and most populous country), Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, and 10 more nations. Key commodities: oil, cocoa, gold.
East Africa
Includes Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Somalia, and others. Home to the Great Rift Valley and many of Africa's highest peaks. One of the fastest-growing economic regions on the continent.
Central Africa
Includes the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, and others. Contains the Congo Basin — the world's second-largest tropical rainforest. Rich in mineral resources.
Southern Africa
Includes South Africa (continent's most industrialized economy), Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and others. Major mining industries: gold, diamonds, platinum, coal.
Interactive Features
All standard Map Explorer interactive features are available in the Africa continental view:
- Click to select: Click any of Africa's 54 countries to highlight it and open its information panel — population, GDP, capital city, area, and any active data overlay values.
- Double-click to zoom: Double-click any country to zoom to its borders. This is especially useful in West Africa where countries are densely packed and borders are close together.
- Data layer overlays: Toggle population, GDP, or area overlays using terminal commands. Country shading reflects the selected metric — Nigeria and Ethiopia stand out sharply on the population layer, while Algeria and DRC dominate the area layer.
- Regional filtering: Use the terminal
filter region [name]command to highlight only the countries in a specific African region, fading others to gray. - Split view: Compare Africa with another continent side by side to conduct intercontinental market analysis.
