TotalApp Docs

Channels

Organise team conversations into topic-based channels — public, private, or project-linked.

Overview

Channels are persistent, topic-based conversation spaces inside TotalApp. Unlike direct messages (which are one-to-one or small group), channels are designed for ongoing team discussions around a project, department, or topic. Members can join public channels freely; private channels require an invitation.

Quick Start

Open the Collaboration section from the sidebar and click Channels. You will see a list of channels you are a member of. Click + New Channel to create one, or browse the channel directory to join existing public channels.

Features

@Mentions

Type @username to notify a specific teammate. They receive an in-app notification and the message is highlighted in their mention feed. Use @here for active members or @channel for all members.

Message Threads

Reply to any message to start a thread. Thread replies are nested under the parent message and don't clutter the main channel feed. Click "View Thread" to expand the full thread in a side panel.

Message Search

Use the search bar inside a channel to filter messages by keyword, date range, or sender. Search is scoped to the current channel by default; switch to global search to find messages across all channels.

Quiet Hours

Set per-channel notification preferences: All messages, Mentions only, or Muted. Muted channels still receive messages but generate no notifications. Per-channel preferences override your global notification settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rename a channel after creating it?
Yes. Channel admins and workspace admins can rename a channel from the channel's Settings panel (gear icon in the top-right). A rename notification is posted in the channel automatically.
What happens to messages when a channel is deleted?
Deleting a channel permanently removes all messages and files shared in it. This action cannot be undone. Consider archiving the channel instead to preserve the history while hiding it from active lists.
How many channels can a workspace have?
There is no hard limit on the number of channels. For clarity, we recommend using a naming convention (e.g. proj- prefix for project channels) as your workspace grows.
